A plan for each day, then the real thing

Built on what works for learning. No practice set can promise a pass, and this one doesn’t.

  1. Step 1: A short diagnostic

A few questions across every area decide where you start. Not graded, and not counted against your free questions.

  2. Step 2: A plan for each day

About 20 minutes, rebuilt each morning from what is due for review and what you missed, so your time goes where you need it.

  3. Step 3: Timed practice

Timed blocks, then a simulation at the exam’s pace, with no feedback until you submit.

  • Questions you were sure of and missed come back the next day
  • Practice starts on your weakest area, then mixes areas as the exam does
  • Early questions walk you through the reasoning; the help fades as you improve
  • One tap says how sure you were, so your study goes where it is needed
  • Cards for the terms, from definition to recognizing it in a case
  • A study streak for consistency; never for your hours

Law and Ethics first, the Clinical Exam after your hours

First, once you are an AMFT

The California Law and Ethics Exam

Format
75 questions in 90 minutes on a computer at a Pearson VUE center: 50 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions, mixed in so you can't tell them apart.
Fee
$75 from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2030 ($150 otherwise), paid to the Board.
When to take it, retakes, and what it covers
When
Once the Board approves your AMFT registration (or, applying from out of state, your Application for Licensure), apply to the Board for it and pay the fee; the Board then tells Pearson VUE you are eligible. Through December 31, 2026, take it before your registration first expires and at least once in each renewal cycle until you pass; from January 1, 2027, there is no yearly attempt under the new law (the Board's regulation, 16 CCR 1829.3, still describes one; ask the Board how it applies it). You pass it before the Clinical Exam. For a request for your initial license, or for a subsequent registration number, that the Board receives after January 1, 2030, the pass must be no more than seven years old.
Retakes
If you don't pass, you can apply to retake it at any time, and the Board approves the retake after 90 days. Through December 31, 2026, take it at least once in each renewal cycle of your registration until you pass. Once your Application for Licensure is approved, retake it within a year of a failed attempt, or your licensing file is closed.
What it covers
  • Consent, Confidentiality, and Privilege16%
  • Limits to Confidentiality and Mandated Reporting16%
  • Legal Standards for Professional Practice12%
  • Professional Competence and Integrity16%
  • Responsibility to Clients and Counseling Relationships24%

After your hours

The California LMFT Clinical Exam

Format
150 questions in four hours on a computer at a Pearson VUE center: 125 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions, mixed in so you can't tell them apart.
Fee
$125 from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2030 ($250 otherwise), paid with your Application for Licensure.
When to take it, retakes, and what it covers
When
The Board sends your eligibility to Pearson VUE once your Application for Licensure is approved and you have passed the Law and Ethics Exam. Take it within one year of whichever came later. Through December 31, 2026, a pass counts for seven years, and if seven years go by from your first attempt without a pass, you pass the current Law and Ethics Exam again before you retake it. From January 1, 2027, the pass must be no more than seven years old when the Board receives your request for your initial license.
Retakes
If you don't pass, you can apply to retake it at any time, and the Board approves the retake after 90 days (since January 1, 2025, as the Board's exam page and Pearson VUE's handbook say; the regulation and the Board's re-exam application, form 37A-298, still print 120 days). Retake it within a year, or your licensing file is closed.

A possible change, not adopted: the Board of Behavioral Sciences has proposed making the AMFTRB national exam California’s LMFT clinical exam, in place of the current Clinical Exam, from July 1, 2027 or later. The proposal is on hold; the Board's next meeting is on November 19–20, 2026. Until the Board adopts a change, you take the current Clinical Exam, and this prep is for it. If the Board makes that change, everyone who has bought Clinical Exam prep gets AMFTRB exam prep included.

The exam fees are separate and paid to the Board.

Questions

Are these real exam questions?

No. They are written by us to the Board’s published outlines, not taken from either exam. No sample item from the candidate handbook was copied.

Who writes them?

Licensure Hours writes them from the Board’s published outlines and the laws they test. Every question has “Report a problem”, and a question can be fixed or pulled at once.

Can you promise I'll pass?

No, and no practice set honestly can. It shows where you stand and what to practice next. You decide when you are ready to take the exam.

Do I need to track my hours here too?

No. Exam prep works on its own, in a California account. Once you have paid for an hours plan here, or bought prep for the other exam, it is $29.

What if the Clinical Exam changes to the AMFTRB exam?

A possible change, not adopted: the Board of Behavioral Sciences has proposed making the AMFTRB national exam California’s LMFT clinical exam, in place of the current Clinical Exam, from July 1, 2027 or later. The proposal is on hold; the Board's next meeting is on November 19–20, 2026. Until the Board adopts a change, you take the current Clinical Exam, and this prep is for it. If the Board makes that change, everyone who has bought Clinical Exam prep gets AMFTRB exam prep included.
