How many supervision hours do you need for the LCSW in New York?

At least 100 hours of clinical supervision, individual or group, spread over the whole of your supervised experience. Secure video counts.

The rule

NYSED requires at least 100 hours of in-person individual or group clinical supervision, distributed appropriately over the period of your supervised experience (8 NYCRR 74.6).

The 100 hours sit alongside the other two requirements: at least 2,000 client-contact hours in diagnosis, psychotherapy and assessment-based treatment planning, over at least 36 months and no more than six years.

Is there a weekly minimum?

NYSED's rules set no hours-per-week figure for LCSW candidates. They ask that the 100 hours be spread appropriately across the whole period, not packed into the end.

As arithmetic, 100 hours over 36 months is a little under an hour a week. Agree on a schedule with your supervisor and employer when you start.

Does video count?

Yes. Face-to-face supervision may use technology acceptable to NYSED, including secure video conferencing to protect confidentiality (8 NYCRR 74.6).

Does group supervision count?

Yes. The rule counts individual or group clinical supervision toward the 100 hours.

What supervision has to cover

NYSED's requirements for supervised experience say your supervisor provides the diagnosis and appropriate treatment for each client, your cases are discussed with your supervisor, and your supervisor gives you oversight and guidance in diagnosing and treating clients.

Who can supervise

  • A licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), or the equivalent as NYSED determines
  • A psychologist licensed where the supervision took place and qualified in psychotherapy, as NYSED determines
  • A psychiatrist who is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, or has equivalent training as NYSED determines

Who keeps the record

Your supervisor is responsible for keeping records of your client-contact hours and supervision hours (8 NYCRR 74.6). When you apply, each supervisor verifies your experience to NYSED on Form 4B.
